It’s a form of productive dissociation, and is super, super helpful.

It’s easy for me to get bogged down in how much pain I’m in… but some of the most painful periods of my life have also been the most productive, writing-wise, because writing is one of my red balloons. 

There is a phrase I use A LOT in my parenting and my son gets very sick of it, but it’s true:

The thing you practise is the thing you get good at.

You may not intentionally be practicing “being grumpy” but if you don’t put effort into practicing “not being grumpy” then I’m afraid that’s what you’re doing. It’s hard! It’s really hard! Sometimes, for some things, it’s pretty much impossible and that sucks!

But being carefully aware that you are going to get good at the things you do most of is a good way to be more careful of what those things are. If that makes sense.

What does this do?

This runs a very basic script, and every six seconds, your computer will double-tap the NumLock key (i.e., turn it on, and then off) in a single instant.  This counts as a key-press, occurs with a key that shouldn’t affect most things that you’re doing, occurs with no gap between them even if it could affect things you’re doing, and should prevent this kind of BS from engaging.  As an aside, this will also prevent your computer from automatically locking itself, so take that into account if you need to manually lock your computer when going to lunch or whatever.

It’s wild that the framing device of Iroh sharing Zuko’s backstory is he’s telling it to a Fire Nation officer doesn’t know how Zuko got his scar, but then a season later an Earth Kingdom farmer does (by which I mean in “Zuko, Alone” some guy heckles him like “heyyyyy this kid’s dad burned and banished him”). It’s fun to think of in-universe reasons for that. A good one is Fire Nation propaganda, another is that the story of Zuko’s whole deal gets spread in the intervening time, but my favorite is that the Fire Nation officer was just not good at keeping up with politics
